@friggo Yes. Gotland would like a word with you. So would Roma.

You may be right about Roma, I wasn't playing KC when she was first introduced. But Gotland was nowhere near as horrible to farm. Single fleet and no support meant way cheaper sorties. You also had a very powerful friend fleet and full LBAS support at boss for nearly guaranteed S-ranks. The only hard part was the pre-boss Re node (comparable with the double dyson), but even there you could use the spoon/donger for an acceptable passing rate. I spent over 100 sorties on that map, and I was definitely not as frustrated back then as I am now. Your mileage may vary of course, but I really hate spending so many resources and sparkling supports only to have the fleet get an A-rank at boss which mostly results in a random common cruiser.

My first event was Fall 2015, and the only event I couldn't get all new ships was Fall 2015 (unsurprisingly), Spring 2016 (Oyashio, Iowa's large scale event)
Since then I never failed to farm all new ships (so I'm feeling very bad right now, failing to get any farmable ship in a "small scale" event)

For farming one particular ship, I think there were comparably difficult ones. Can't really recall (my memory after every event fades pretty fast, despite the effort put in it. I think its PTSD)
One that I remember in particular was I-13, though I was pretty lucky on that occasion, she dropped in the last map and that farming on easy was impractical.
Gotland was similar (but was less expensive per sortie and lower drop rate), so was Tashkent but Tashkent had higher drop rate.

But I don't think there was any event were farming any of the drops involved maps that hard and comps such expensive.

@Leyana: Ah yes, Roma farming. Still have my Roma 250+ club badge. Wasn't Graf another when she was introduced? I don't recall the farming itself bad at all, but do recall some (200, 250, etc) sorties & no Graf.

@kazenorin @friggo @Danielosama : Haven't tried the 3x OASW (and perhaps I should given my pass rate on chipping >_>), so I can't say how much of a difference that makes though I do expect a difference. But yes, this is definitely not a new drop-only farming friendly event IMO. There's been a shift starting a few events ago where you have new drop-only ships walled behind multiple gauges & unlocking which makes farming prior to clear much more arduous (on top of potential accidental clear).

Just took a look at Johnston drop rates (Poi) for Casual A-rank and it's only 0.815%. Easy isn't materially better at 0.887% nor is Medium surprisingly (0.822%). Only decent drop rate on A-rank is on Hard (2.5%). So that's yet another limitation for farming prior to clear. Pretty clear to me that Devs don't want players farming prior to clear anymore, though it does come at the expense of newer/more casual players who plan to clear on lower difficulty anyway. If you're not on Hard, better get an S-rank win when farming - at least for Johnston.

Higher drop rates can offset having to farm post-clear on higher difficulties. As I recall, there were some historically fairly high drop rates recently, but while 4.6% (Johnston S-rank Hard) isn't bad (seen MUCH worse), if you have a low pass rate on top of high expense and such it's not all that much in sum total.

Devs have played around with this before - the terrible (IMO) "only drops on xyz enemy comp" mechanic comes to mind. Hated that. We also have Boss nodes with may not give a drop (that wasn't always the case and something I'm not a fan of either. Sure may get a common, but it is a boss node after all). This last one won't affect new ships, but can affect notable/rare ships some ate trying to get.

All in all, it's a bit disconcerting, especially when one considers (extra) large event and potentially 4 new drop-only ships. RNG is RNG and getting a drop is RNG = may need to make 100, 150, 200 or more sorties (hopefully NOT!).

Have to see how it goes, maybe I get a lucky Johnston drop while clearing (certainly hope so), but also got to get Hayanami. Mentally preparing myself for not getting all ships for the first time in quite a while. Johnston is first priority, but do want Hayanami.

GL to all of us. Hopefully everyone will get who they want.

@goesto11 They just announced the extra friend fleets are coming this weekend. Hopefully make farming easier.

@Leyana: Thanks. Also LOL. At the rate I'm going for me it might mean "makes clearing easier". At this point I'll take it. XD Still, even if I get Johnston, still got Hayanami. Not sure what that's like.

Completed my farming of Hayanami and Johnston, so here are my thoughts:

E2 farming is perhaps the hardest out of all the 3 maps. When farming, I always consider doing it on the minimum difficulty that the ship drops, which is usually Casual or Easy. For E2 casual farming pre-clear, it is more or less a retarded waste of resources for the following reasons:

    1) You need to gimp your fleet to avoid sinking the weak boss
    2) As a result, node M becomes harder to pass
    3) Consequently, there is an average chance for you not to get A-rank at the boss node
    4) Resetting the map is too tedious and not worth it

I ended up clearing it on Hard first, then went back to farm for Hayanami using the same fleet with the same setup as clearing (+-1 anti-imp setup). As I can use a stronger fleet for farming, passing node M is much easier (though rate of retreat is still around 30-40%). In exchange, the usage of a stronger fleet and full LBAS burns resources per run.

For E3, farming on casual is relatively cheap with very high passing rate. I used 2BB 1CV 2CAV Akitsu Maru + 1CL 5DD (3 OASW setup) and only 1 LBAS base sent to the boss. Even resetting the map to farm on S-rank is legit because unlocking phase 2 is easy and the first boss node also drops good ships.

In total, I spent 5x more resources and buckets farming Hayanami than on Johnston.

BTW, if you are done farming and need to level some ships, E2 node Q is a good place. All you need to do is set up a STF that routes to node Q, fill the main fleet with ships equipped with anti-imp equipment, and you can farm that node endlessly ignoring morale. The escort fleet will not enter battle 99% of the time so you can put all the ships you need to level there.

@Ken G: Good info, thanks. Something to keep in mind for future events when trying to assess whether to farm prior to clear or not. Got lucky with Johnston (thankfull) so that's done, but will have to try my luck at E-2 for Hayanami. Used support for Hard clear, but really want to avoid that for farming. Hopefully LBAS will be enough. And yeah, Node M can be a problem, but hopefully will be OK-ish with LBAS help & Nelson Touch. Plan to use clearing fleet. Will see about upping anti-PT Imp equipment as well, but suspect won't make too many changes.

[Edit] Starting on E-2 farming. Had some retreats, but not too bad(?) so far I guess given not using any support. Still, while not cheap with STF, it's the bucket cost per sortie which is really high. :/

@211303: Thanks for the info. Have to see how it goes with Hayanami for considering that.

@goesto11 Support expedition is not needed for E2 farming (and on hindsight, is also not required for clearing either lol). If your LBAS can score good hits on node M, you can even wipe out at least 1 BB hime before battle starts. Only problem is bucket usage is pretty high, around an average of 5 per sortie for me, considering this is not even the final map.

E3 Hard post-clear farming is definitely out. I'm not going to play Russian roulette with sub hime twice per sortie lol
