@Observer 39 Sorry for the late reply. As mentioned in Discord, my power went out in the middle of reading, and didn't come back before I fell asleep.

Poor Haya is still fragile on the inside there. No doubt reliving some past trauma when those she cared about were taken from her, although in a different manner.

    Eldridge is a good girl.

I haven't actually messed around with Yorktown at all in AL, so I wasn't actually aware of her personality there. That was an interesting read for her, having to pick it up on the go. I get the feeling her story is going to be an even more feels-filled chapter.

    And Melon needs a vacation.

@Emerald Acid As I've no doubt said before, Hayashimo is fundamentally a fragile girl. Her off-putting and often dour demeanor is a shield for her past traumas, while the few times she opens up is her own attempts to finding a new path to the happiness she sees in others.

Yorktown was one of my first carriers in AL (alongside Long Island and Saratoga), so I already had a bit of a soft spot for her. She's only grown on me as a character recently, seeing as she fits much the same molds as Hayashimo or Natori do to a higher extreme (Her references to light and darkness certainly helped to push that along). And yes, her story will tug the heartstrings at least a little bit.

'Work' at Minato's base is essentially a vacation for Yuubari compared to the structured regimen she follows while at Fleet Command. She truly relishes the time she spends in her 'home away from home', despite it being seemingly more of the same.

@Emerald Acid Sure, along with setting (and ability to change) her own schedule with the tasks Minato does give her. Part of the two's mutual trust and all.

    Part Thirty-Four: Lost in Thoughts

Yorktown now sees the base in the light for the first time, and is immediately struck with an almost childlike wonder. She wanders around the courtyard, marveling at the combination of familiar military aspects and the remnants of civilian architecture.

    "This was...a school...before all this."

A voice from behind her. "It still is in a way, carrier. The curriculum's changed substantially in some areas though."

She turns around to see Isokaze, who has a light smile on her face. "You are another of the Captain's girls, I take it?"

The destroyer gives a nod with her eyes closed. "Destroyer Isokaze, serving under...no, alongside Admiral Gidemo." Opening one eye, she looks over Yorktown. "You are familiar with him?"

The carrier shakes her head. "Not exactly...I was saved from my past fate by his actions last night. This one is overwhelmed with the hospitality your Captain has shown us..."

"It does sound like something he would do." A small chuckle. "May I ask your name then, carrier?"

"Yorktown, formerly under..." She frowns. "Sorry, it would be rude to speak of him right now. Not before Captain-sama knows..."

"Hmm, I see." A tilt of the head and a hand on the hip. "You were on your way to him, then?"

"At the 'mess hall', yes...To discuss that and a few other topics."

    "Would you like an escort?"

"Eh?" Yorktown takes a step back, surprised. "This one wouldn't-"

Isokaze chuckles. "I was going there myself anyways. Come along." Not waiting for a response, she strides towards the mess hall. The foreign carrier stumbles a bit as she catches up to the other girl's pace.

As the destroyer puts her hand on the door, she looks back at Yorktown. "You remind me of another I served with some time ago...But that is for another time, I suppose." She then pulls it open with a flourish.

Minato is seated at a table, reading a small book. Yura is behind him with a curious look on her face and a small towel in her hand...The young man turns the page, glancing back to the ponytailed cruiser.

    "Am I bothering you, Yura?"

"Not at all, Admiral-san. Just was wondering what you were..." She looks up, noticing the pair approaching. "Ah, you must be the carrier Admiral was telling me about. Umm..."

Yorktown straightens before bowing respectfully. "Yorktown, miss. This one is sorry for the delay..."

A light snap as Minato closes his book and rises. "No apology needed. There's nothing truly pressing yet, so we all keep to our own paces for now." He holds his free hand out to a nearby chair. "Sit, please. I'll get us something to have over our discussion."

As the carrier sits in the offered seat and the young man heads behind the counter, Yura lets out a soft chuckle. "Already in Admiral-san's pace, I see. Hope you can keep up with him, Yorktown-san."

Yorktown fidgets slightly, looking around the hall. "I have little hope for much, but if he's willing to take me in..."

The light cruiser begins to wipe down one of the other tables, nodding. "I'm sure he's willing to do more than just that. He has a way of making others feel at ease, despite his own strangeness...Like everyone's kind uncle or father-in-law. Yuubari-san and Hayashimo-san are both quite close to him, you know?"

"The machinist as well? It did seem as equals when they spoke earlier..."

Isokaze sits opposite the foreign carrier, leaning onto the table with a sly smile. "Do you also wish to be like that with him, carrier?"

Yorktown looks down and to the side, shifting uncomfortably. "N-not to that extreme, maybe...This one doesn't wish to intrude on established contracts more than necessary. Even just serving under him would be enough."

A chuckle as the destroyer leans back. "I'm partially joking, as I see you are a woman of duty first. Not many are like that these days from my cursory observations."

    "...Perhaps I'm just..."

There's the sound of a door closing, causing the three girls to turn towards the noise. Minato is carrying a tray upon which two pots are placed: one coffee and the other tea. Two mugs flank the coffee pot, while four teacups are together to one side of the teapot. The young man comes around the various tables, finally setting the tray down in front of Isokaze and Yorktown.

"Didn't ask if you preferred coffee or tea, so I made a bit of both. You can have some too if you'd like, Yura."

"Thank you for the offer, Admiral-san, but I'll be fine for now."

The carrier shakes her head and lifts it, a sad smile on her face. "This one will be fine with coffee, Captain-sama...No additions."

Minato returns the smile with one of his own. "Simple enough." He pours a mug of the dark liquid for her, along with the much lighter tea for himself and Isokaze, before sitting down beside the latter. "I see you've been acquainted with one of the newest members of my fleet, alongside one of the...oldest, for lack of a better term."

Yorktown nods. "Splendid girls, both of them. But we are not here to truly discuss them, correct?"

"Of course not. I'm here for your story, as you would tell it." He puts both hands in front of himself, palms up. "Mostly of what led you to your current state of...Abandonment."

A small sip from the mug as she sighs. "It was not 'abandonment', for one. My former Captain, Shaw, was stripped of his rank and ordered to have the fleet be divided among other active fleets...or be decommissioned if our results were less than satisfactory. This one along with a few others were deemed as such."

Yura, who has now gone to stand behind the counter, lowers her head sadly as Isokaze raises an eyebrow. "You look to be competent at the least, Carrier Yorktown. Your superiors must have disturbingly high standards to strike you from the list...Or relegate you to the scrapheap."

"'Scrapheap'? Are they truly that brutal over here?"

The destroyer waves off the carrier's surprise nonchalantly. "Only under extreme circumstances. Severe insubordination, consistent poor performance...Or the threat of Abyssal contamination."

"...I see." Yorktown holds the mug in her lap, looking down into it. "Decommissioning for us is merely disarmament and integration into civilian society. Most would relish the chance to, but I still wanted to continue serving as a warship, out on the open waves. This is...all I know and hold dear, even if it is dark and painful." She looks up, the sad smile once again upon her face. "The orders were absolute, but there were a few who took pity on this one and paved the way to where I am now."

Minato folds his arms. "I assume Captain Shaw could do little to help without further damage to himself or his career, then?"

"Yes. It was a friend of the Captain and his girls who did so much, from securing my equipment to making sure I could still be combat-ready at any moment. But the one who truly stood beside me was Long Island-san. Despite all the warnings and potential dangers I presented to her, her mind was made up. She said she'd follow me wherever I would go, even if it meant never sailing again...Potentially throwing away her future for my sake. Sometimes I feel I'm unworthy of her high praise and attachment to me."

"I'm sure I know of at least one other like that around here." The young man smirks over his cup. "So then, what brought you so far this way? Did this friend also do that?"

"Not exactly." Yorktown sets the now empty mug down on the table, turning to face Minato square in the eye. "This one, along with many others of my country, have heard of your conflict with these 'Abyssals' on numerous occasions. Our forces face a different, yet eerily similar foe, along with our own infighting that occurs both under their influence and otherwise. My situation presented an opportunity to perhaps start again, under a new flag...A 'new game+', I believe Long Island-san called it?" A chuckle. "She always was playing some game when off-duty."

"An apt enough comparison." Minato taps the table, swirling the cup in his other hand. "And due to your 'unknown' status, you did not approach my High Command directly in fear you'd be ratted out."

"Something like that, I suppose. We still wanted to make contact with them however, hence the coded music message. I'm thankful that it reached sympathetic ears and minds with you, Captain-sama." She bows her head while still seated.

He shakes his head. "There was a degree of luck involved there, though I can say I have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. They rightly suspected the call was from a foreigner, so they sent the closest foreigner to investigate." A lean backward, putting both hands behind his head as he looks towards the ceiling. "I'll get the necessary work done to formally add you to my roster, but to my eyes you and Long Island are already a part of the fleet." The smirk on his face widens into a full smile as he glances back to the carrier. "Now, I suppose you'd want to know more of your new home...and those who dwell there."

Yorktown quivers on the spot, slowly taking a breath. "Y-yes. If you don't mind...Captain Minato-sama."

And so the story continues. Here I wanted to show the distinctions between AL and KC further, such as alluding to how the non-human enemies are similar along with how some stories take the in-game scrapping mechanic quite literally. It was fun figuring out who would contrast Yorktown's melancholy among the established characters of the base, finally settling on Isokaze (and a bit of Yura), whose straightforward professional approach is more along the lines of what Yorktown is familiar with.

As for what's next on the docket, well...It will introduce not just two more characters I like from AL, but also involve more than just Minato and his fleet. And don't worry, more of the KC girls will have their time in the spotlight...Along with a few others mentioned long ago.

@Observer 39 The stage is being built and the characters put in place. Soon the act will begin in full, I presume.

And aww at Long Island being such a friend there, to the point of being willing to go that far, as Yorktown said.

@Emerald Acid That it will. I've wanted to start it sooner, but real life has been pretty good at stalling progress.

I've always thought of Long Island usually being like that: extremely selfless and stubborn when it comes to the people she's attached to. At least when she's not being a total goof or lazing around.

    Part Thirty-five: Another Observer

Murakumo was used to sharing rooms with others, though with the small number of personnel in the base, that never really came up in practice. She was not, however, used to sharing a bed with someone. So one can imagine the small jolt of surprise when the first thing she feels upon being coherent of her surroundings is the warmth of another body against hers.

I went to sleep alone as usual last night...Who, or what...

She rises to a sitting position while opening her eyes, turning her head towards the source of the heat...And sees Eldridge dozing next to her, her long hair unbound and covering most of her body. The blonde destroyer's face is one of gentle serenity as she nuzzles closer.

Just like a 'real' child, huh...The silver-haired girl strokes the other girl's head softly as she looks to the clock on the wall. Wonder what that signal was really about...And what Minato said last night about Hayashimo. Best to ask directly, as usual. Giving a stretch as she climbs out of the futon, she sighs. "No rest for the worried, huh..."

Eldridge rolls over into where Murakumo was before, curling up. After the latter gets properly dressed, she pulls the blanket over the former with a small smile on her face.

"...Keep up the good work, little one. Big sister has her own to do." And with that, she walks out of the room...To see Kuroshio leaning against the wall beside the door, hands behind her head with a bright smile on her face.

"Ya look ta be ina good mood today, Kumo-senpai~"

"Not as glowing as you, it seems." A narrowing of the eyes as she closes the door. "Something the matter to have you waiting outside my door?"

"Nothin' particular, 'cept that we've got more new ladies ta contend with." The grey-haired destroyer shrugs as she gets off the wall. "Nui gave me tha quick-n-dirty before going out ta exercise, and well...Things contin'ya ta get more lively."

Murakumo sighs as she closes one eye. "You always wanted this place to be like that, right? And as I've said before, it's thanks to him for starting the change."

"Yep. I gotta thank Chief real proper one'a these days...Hmhmhm~" The sideways glance and coy smile make the silver-haired destroyer uneasy for a moment.

"...Just don't get carried away, alright?"

"Yes, yes. I'll be careful, Senpai~" She turns and begins to walk away. "Time ta start the day, ya?"

"Yeah." Murakumo looks back to the door of her room. "...Right behind you."

The two destroyer girls make their way outside the dorms, discussing the day's schedule among other things. As they cross the courtyard, Murakumo happens to look towards the gate...And sees a girl standing there, clutching what appears to be a two-pronged spear. She is clad in a tattered black cloak and hood, the inside lined a soft shade of red, with two pointed ears on the hood. Her pale white hair frames a face with similar coloration, two stark red eyes slowly scanning the area around her. A short gothic dress of black and white (with hints of red) along with knee-high striped socks and strapped boots complete her outfit.

Murakumo raises an eyebrow as she motions to the girl. "Kuroshio...Do you know that girl?"

"Eh? Who ya..." She looks back, her face quickly going from bored to curious as she narrows her eyes. "Can't say I do. She looks likea one of them 'cosplayers' Yuubari-san talks about...Ya think?"

"It's possible, but...Come on." The veteran destroyer quickly turns towards the solitary figure, her pace just as fast. Kuroshio follows suit, though is a respectable distance behind. The red-eyed girl immediately snaps to the two moving towards her, her expression a neutral mask. Murakumo stops a short distance from her, hands on her hips and eyes narrow.

"This is a military base, miss. No one comes out here on their own volition, especially not by land."

The girl bows respectfully, her response in a lilting, almost haunting voice. "My mission is that important, miss destroyer. Is your Admiral, Gidemo, available?"

Murakumo shifts uncomfortably. "Perhaps. May I have your name...?"

A blink into a nod. "...Relina. And you are?"

"Murakumo." She glances around. "You came all the way out here alone?"

"Yes. My mission is meant for Admiral Gidemo and those in his circle only." Relina's lips curl ever so slightly upward. "He would know a thing or two about keeping secrets, wouldn't he?"

A scratching of the head with a sigh. "Normally I'd turn someone like you away without a second thought, but..."

The visitor tilts her head. "What is it?"

"...You feel familiar, somehow. Like you're one of us. Is that true?"

Relina gives a low chuckle. "It would be more accurate to say I was like you. My time as a warship is left to the shadows of the past now, but my knowledge of such still remains."

"...I see." Murakumo turns profile to Relina, hands once again on her hips. A quick glance towards the base confirms her suspicions: Kuroshio had slipped away sometime earlier. "I'll be your escort for your stay here then, until I'm ordered otherwise." She gives a small smile. "Even if my Admiral was busy, he'd certainly make time to honor a guest."

Another bow. "I am in your care, destroyer Murakumo."

The two proceed to the mess hall, Relina keeping her distance as she slowly looks around. Her previously neutral expression is now more melancholy, as if remembering past sadness...Upon Murakumo's opening of the door to the building however, it returns to the previous mask.

Minato is seated at a table close to the door, along with two faces the veteran destroyer was unfamiliar with: Yorktown and Long Island. The last is gazing sparkly-eyed at what appear to be glowing blue butterflies fluttering over the table, while the other glances to the ones entering the room with a somber smile...which quickly changes to mild shock upon seeing Relina.

    "You were...one of the others...How..."

Minato raises an eyebrow. "Another friend of yours, Yorktown?"

The cloaked girl steps forward, doing a polite curtsy. "An ally at least, Admiral Gidemo. I, Relina, have come bearing a plea of assistance to the one called 'the Observer'."

A quick glance to Murakumo, who folds her arms with a small scowl, then back to the speaker. Closing his right eye and rising from his seat, he waves his hand to dissipate the lights (much to Long Island's chagrin) as he evokes his more business-like tone. "That would be me, yes. How can this one help you?"

She looks to every other face in the room, slowly and deliberately - Murakumo, Long Island, Yorktown, and finally Minato - as she walks a few more paces. "An enemy different than the one you know moves against you, and I was tasked to monitor this new threat. Alone as I am, they no doubt think I will inevitably falter in this duty...Or this is merely a ruse to strike me from their records. In either case, I will still do what was asked of me."

The young man frowns, putting one hand on his head. "How truly terrible...So you want me and my fleet as a sort of failsafe in case things go south, while not being able to actively guard you?"

"Correct. The inclusion of other bodies may further jeopardize this mission, and I may yet be wrong in needing assistance should problems arise at all. But..." She shakes her head. "I cannot shake this feeling of premonition. And so I ask, no, implore you and your fleet." She sweeps her hand outward, her piercing gaze a contrast to her almost gentle voice. "If the darkness would try to claim me, would you instead snatch me away? Shield me as you have others?"

Minato gives a sigh as a weary smile appears on his face. "...You've certainly done some research on me. More than most at least." He steps around the table, hands in his pockets. All eyes are on him as he moves to stand closer to Relina, the difference in size much more apparent: The young man is a full head taller than the girl with the spear. "How you gained such information doesn't matter at this point. But I do have a few questions of my own for you, Miss Relina."

She tilts her head with a small smile, looking up to the man's mis-matched eyes. "Of course you would, Admiral Gidemo. I do not wish to tarry here much longer, however..."

"Then I'll leave it at two." He holds up one finger. "How will I know to aid you if I have no eyes in the area? And..." Another finger goes up. "Do you have anyone else close to you that I should inform in case the worst happens?"

Relina reaches into her tattered cape, pulling out what appears to be a miniature replica turret, the make unfamiliar. "This is a trinket tied to my body, a relic of my past life. As such, it will tell you when harm will come to me...and lead you to its source. As for the other..." She sighs, her expression turning to sadness. "There is only one I trust now, besides you and your fleet. Though even she does not know of this fool's errand."

He puts his hand forward, taking a moment to look at the received miniature before focusing back at her. "Tell me of her then, and we'll have a deal."

The cloaked girl closes her eyes. "She is my dear sister, still fighting alongside my former companions. Stitched together like a damaged doll with a touch as cold as ice, she nonetheless holds pride and strength in her chest...And an attachment to me far stronger than myself to her."

    "A name?"

"...Terror." Relina smiles, one still filled with sadness. "A name so opposite of what she really is."

Minato nods, his hand on his chin in thought. "So be it, then." He straightens, letting a breath in and out slowly, before raising his hand towards Relina. "Hold still a moment."

    "What is-"

The hand comes to rest on the small girl's head, causing her to freeze with eyes open. The young man's voice comes into her mind, straight and sharp like a knife.

"The Observer will watch over you...Erebus. The secret is safe with me."

Relina's eyes go wide as she takes a step back. Minato's face is now holding a small smirk as he returns his hand to the pocket. "Now then, allow me to escort you back to the gate. You have a schedule to keep, after all."

The girl blinks, shaking her head as she composes herself. "Of course, Admiral Gidemo." A curtsy while lowering her head. "I am...relieved to have your assistance with this, truly."

Yorktown rises from her seat, her face full of concern. "Ere-no, Relina-sama."

Relina turns to the carrier, her expression neutral once again. "Yorktown-san...Our fates seem to ever intertwine, as walkers in the dark."

"...I never got a chance to thank you for your help back then. So..."

A shake of the head. "There is no need. Seeing you again like this is gratitude enough for me. May your spirit soar alongside your new Captain."

Yorktown opens her mouth as if to speak further, but decides against it, giving a smile and nod instead. Minato turns to the door leading outside, Long Island shadowing him with a curious look.

"Come along then. It may be early now, but the journey may be longer than the light can burn."

More character interactions and building of events, huzzah~ I was initially going to have Hayashimo as the 'main' target of Eldridge's attachment, but Murakumo felt like a better fit overall...And it allows me to show her caring side a bit more often, perhaps.

Erebus is yet another favorite of mine from AL, along with Terror to only a smaller extent. The former hits a lot of soft spots for me, from the 'dark magical girl' look to her haunting voice and general aloofness. A strong contrast to Long Island's goofiness and Eldridge's childlike curiosity. The latter is fantastical in that she's the 'cute friendly anime zombie': not out to eat brains or flesh, but wanting to belong in a world that would usually shun them.

As to why Erebus has a different name here, it's another aspect of decommissioning I wanted to address a bit further. Many of the shipgirls' original names are either not common or downright bizarre for real-life names, so the need to change them into something more believable is integral. How they gain their 'civilian' names varies depending on the situation.
