@Emerald Acid This part delves into a bit of my own past, as what Hayashimo showed here is similar to my own reactions to having lost someone I was deeply attached to when I was younger. I never truly moved on from my great-grandfather's death until after his funeral ceremony, and the three-volley salute is essentially that for US military honors. And since I know the inevitable follow-up question, Nachi is the one Hayashimo was closest to out of those fallen few (for more than the obvious reasons) with Kaga being another subtle influence on her.

That line was mainly for ceremony, as those already stationed at the base know of the mission involving Ryuujou earlier. Some of the new faces may know of her in passing (mainly the other carriers), but they might or might not know of her being at Emerald's base currently.

That's right. It's the same situation with Takanami (6th Yuugumo) and Hayashimo (17th Yuugumo), where the time and length of their post, experiences and general demeanor are regarded higher than their class designations. Also why Murakumo is often referred to as 'the veteran destroyer' and why everyone at Buin acknowledges her input on any matter (despite not being secretary ship).

@Observer 39 I see. The extra inclusion of your personal self certainly adds to the emotion of the scene. It got a bit of an emotional rise out of me just picturing it from the words used.

Over a month has passed since I posted an update here...This time, it's a trip into the past. Enjoy~

    Interlude 2: Light of Hope

(Note: this interlude takes place before the current story.)

In the depths of Fleet Command lie a series of rooms, all identical in layout: Small grey squares with only a table and two chairs within them, a single door leading in or out. The halls, colored in the same dull grey as the rooms and similarly bare of any significance, are usually empty and as quiet as a graveyard...But today is different. A young woman strides towards the farthest room with steps measured and purposeful, a folder full of papers and a clipboard held in one arm. She is clad in a white and blue sailor uniform with a small ribbon pinned to the front, her light black hair pulled back with a blue hairband and a pair of half-rimmed glasses sit perched upon her face. Another younger-looking girl is leaning against the wall next to the door, herself wearing a mostly black variation of the sailor uniform with matching tights and a moon symbol on her skirt-belt. Upon noticing the approaching figure, she gets off the wall and salutes.

"Ooyodo-san. The mission was a success."

The young woman nods. "Thank you, Kikuzuki." She pushes up her glasses before giving a sigh. "...I'm sorry you had to participate in this."

Dropping the salute, Kikuzuki gives a shrug. "Better than being on the frontlines, I guess. Especially if it's under someone like that guy."

"Indeed. To think someone like him got past the initial tests...Enough trouble amongst ourselves, let alone the higher chain." She flips through some of the papers she's holding. "Perhaps these new unknown arrivals will be the catalyst for change."

Another shrug from the destroyer as she leans back against the wall. "If you say so, Ooyodo-san."

With that, Ooyodo opens the door. Within the room is another young girl, seated with her arms folded across her chest. Her white dress and long platinum silver hair give a strong contrast to the drab grey surrounding her. Looking up, her scowl gives way to reassurance.

"Should have expected it to be you, Ooyodo-san. Do you ever stop working?"

The woman gives a small laugh with a weary smile. "If I did, who else would do the work as efficiently?" Closing the door behind her, she walks up to the table and places the folder and clipboard upon it. "You know of course why you were brought here, correct?"

The destroyer tosses her hair back, her look once again becoming serious. "What happened off-the-record in Admiral Iizuka's base...My former Admiral."

Ooyodo sits down, adjusting her glasses. "Indeed so." She puts one hand on the folder. "I've compiled all the information I could gather on his reported actions, along with accounts from other non-connected personnel. You are the first of his fleet I have contacted regarding this matter."

"Since I'm technical flagship, huh...Well, where should I start then?"

"Just the latest incident for now, and what led up to it." She picks up the clipboard, a pen already in her hand. "In your own words."

A nod, then a lean forward, hands under her chin. "Hmm...Guess it would be when we first got the order. The look in his eyes was disgusting. Only thinking of the glory and not of us at all." She shakes her head. "All capital ships were put to 'refinement' immediately, what few we had, while the rest of us were assigned to resource management or 'refinement assistance'. For over a full month's time, there was little time to rest, let alone collect our thoughts. Kaga-san was routinely worn out at the end of the day, though she never truly let it show and no one asked why."

"..." For a moment, there is only the sound of the pen scratching against paper and board as Murakumo gives a small smile.

"They were especially adamant about keeping everyone's spirits up." She leans back. "Kinugasa and Ryuujou took time to catch up with literally everyone, while Haguro and Nachi-san always seemed to be right there when you needed someone to talk to. Even Kaga-san seemed less...closed off than usual. I won't soon forget how she gave part of her portion to me after a particularly stressful day. No words, only the action and a look."

"Quite unusual, indeed." An adjustment of the glasses, then back to writing.

"Before we knew it, the mission time was upon us. As we were part of the forward scouting fleet, we had only the barest amount of information on what the enemy was or their strength before we were to sortie." A shrug. "Something about a Princess-class Abyssal, along with aircraft and submarines. Since we were so few in number, the main fleet formed itself for the op: Nachi-san as flagship, with Kinugasa, myself, Hatsushimo, Kaga-san and Ryuujou. The rest of us were put on support, someways from the main fleet."

Murakumo lowers her head and puts her hands in her lap. Ooyodo stops writing, looking up.

"Everything was going relatively well, with only minor damage on Kinugasa and Hatsushimo from stray torpedoes and dive bombers enroute. The enemy vanguard, however, proved to be a greater challenge...One we did not surmount at first, as you know. As the firefight continued, Nachi-san gave the order to retreat, but Admiral belayed that order. 'Without victory, you cannot go home,' I remember him saying." She grits her teeth, her hands balling into fists. "We regrouped and charged them, knowing we were truly expendable in the eyes of our 'Admiral'. It was..."

She feels a hand on her shoulder, causing the destroyer to look up. Ooyodo is beside her now, her face sympathetic. As she places her own hand upon hers, she takes a steadying breath before continuing.

"That Northern Princess told us to go home one last time, but we could not. Not without her gone. When she did finally fall, the victory was hollow. Nachi-san and Hatsushimo were the last to fall, holding the resurging swarm back as the remainder of us retreated. I can still see the two standing there...Back to back." Murakumo turns her other hand over, looking at it. "Hayashimo...I had to drag her away myself, she was so distraught. You know the rest from there, I take it?"

"Yes." Ooyodo returns to the other side of the table, picking up the folder and clipboard. "Time runs short, so we'd have to wrap up anyways." She smiles as she heads to the door. "Thank you for the trouble, Murakumo."

The destroyer returns the smile as she moves to follow. "No trouble at all, Ooyodo-san."

The next day at Buin Base, Yuubari is tinkering with some scale humanoid figures as Murakumo and Hayashimo enter the workshop. The silver-haired girl struts in wearing a frown on her face, while the raven-haired girl glides behind her, her mood taciturn and brooding. The grey-haired young woman sets her tools down and stands, a small smirk on her own face.

"What's this about, Yuubari? Something from High Command?"

"That's right, Ace. Two things, in fact...Both dealing with Admirals."

Hayashimo, her head down, starts slightly at the mention of 'Admirals'. In a very low voice, she mutters, "What about...them?"

Yuubari taps her lips lightly. "I'll keep this simple. First." She holds up one finger. "Your former Admiral, Iizuka, was unceremoniously executed for insubordination."

Murakumo's eyes go wide as she takes a step back. "Haah?!? I knew he was a bastard and trash, but to have him killed? That's just..."

"Guy had a history of failure and general unpleasantness. His posting here was a final chance at getting some use from him while lessening his influence among the higher-ups. A sweeping under the rug in a sense." The experimental cruiser shrugs. "The deal was simple: You screw up, you're done. Literally."

The silver-haired girl puts a hand on her head, then shakes it with eyes closed. "And the other?"

"A new Admiral is to be stationed here soon. It has to be cleared through High Command still, but the initial impressions are good."

The raven-haired girl lifts her head and tilts it to the side, her face now full of curiosity.

"He's a foreigner that goes by the code name 'Observer'. Called himself an information broker, but can't say I've heard of him before...Not sure how Yura did, and she's always good at dodging the question when I ask it." A shrug as she slides a picture into view on the table. The face of a young man looks back, his short black hair turning silver at the tips and one eye a dull shade of gold. "Younger than the last few as well. Heard Aoba was hanging all over him for some time." She chuckles.

Murakumo glances to Hayashimo...And can't help but smile at the glimmer of hope in the other's eye. "I hope, for our sakes, he'll be more competent than them as well."

Yesterday was my birthday, a time where I tend to reflect on the past, whether my own or something/someone else's. That got me back to thinking of the history of this fanfic and my want to expand upon it, resulting in what you see here. The next update or so will most likely be similar to this one: side-stories not only of the girls within Buin Base, but of other parts of the world I've created. Maybe something about pre-WWII shipgirls...

    Hoppo-chan, no D:
@Observer_39 An interesting look back at our resident jerkass past admiral. The potential thoughts about how if all his past failures were from incompetence, or just being new and the failures were a bit beyond his control. The potentials almost make a bit of sympathy. Almost. There's no excuse for glory seeking while treating your subordinates as expendable, so I still mostly feel that he got with he deserved. Fluffy certainly wasn't expecting that much though.

Interesting that despite basically having a day's worth of sea travel between the two, our bases are actually closer to each other than I thought, seeing as my Rabaul is also up in the North as well, specifically just so if I ever wanna do something involving Hoppo, I'd have the excuse of being the closest, or at least one of them.

Happy to see my girl's still the one doing what she can to help make the rest of the fleet happier of her own accord, even back then. Always looking out for others, she is.

    @Emerald Acid Hoppo's Abyssal, she'll be fine

Not many would be, at least to modern military standards. But his fate was a foregone conclusion already, given what was told before in-story...Really brings home the differences in mentality of the time period: the weird transitional period between old feudal teachings and something more akin to the present day.

I've never truly given the base's location much thought, even with our little collab from before. When doing some research on how the fleet was lost however, I realized that composition (2CA, 2DD 1CV 1CVL) was a potential routing option for Summer 2014's E-2 and built from there. While my time spent there was of little fuss, many others have their horror stories of being stopped there for most of (if not all) the event.

Just a reinforcing of the nature we both share about her along with many others: being the sister she never really had to others around her. Kinugasa often is shown with that same trait, so it made sense to put the two together.

And just like that, a few more months pass with little to show for it. Time to get back into this world...

    Interlude 3: Past and Future

(Note: This interlude is shortly after the defense of Fleet Command.)

Work has resumed as normal, the ones responsible for the impromptu defense safely on their way home. As the command cruiser Ooyodo once again sits down at her desk, there is a knock on the door.

I don't recall any visitors on the itinerary today...Raising an eyebrow, she puts her elbows on the desk and leans forward. "Come in."

The door opens, and two striking women stride into the room. One has hair a stunning shade of red (cut short) with a stern look, while the other wears a playful smile underneath dirty blonde hair. Both are clad in black uniforms with a cape draped over the shoulders, the inner linings dyed red. As the redhead gives a sharp salute, the blond merely folds her arms as she looks around the room.

Ooyodo adjusts her glasses, her eyes now narrow. "Truly a surprise to see two veteran Dreadnoughts so far from home...What brings Britain to Japan under no advance notice?"

"She's a sharp one, isn't she? Orion." The blond woman glances to the redhead.

She returns the look with a thinly veiled scowl. "We were told such before, Conqueror. Now then..." She produces an envelope from her uniform and sets it on the desk. "I shall be brief. We of Her Majesty's Navy wish to ask for Japan's assistance in an upcoming operation. Part of the details are in this letter."

The seated cruiser slides the letter closer to herself with a nod. "Must be quite serious, to come all the way from the Isles to merely deliver a letter..."

Conqueror chuckles. "Indeed. The Abyssals are beginning to mass close to our 'borders', but no signs of action otherwise. Our sisters are already mobilizing, but even we believe it won't be enough to turn them aside. As for the personal delivery, Admiral believed that it would 'lessen the risk of leaked information'...Or something." She shrugs.

Ooyodo nods as she rises from her chair. "I see. We will let our resident Admirals know of the situation posthaste." Adjusting her glasses again, she smiles. "I'm sure some of them will...enjoy the adventure."

Orion gives a puzzled look for only a moment before shaking her head. "That's all to report. Unfortunately, we cannot tarry here for long. We will look forward to your future support, Miss Ooyodo."

"Of course, Miss Orion. Miss Conqueror." A straight bow from the command cruiser, matched by a small flourish and bow from the blond battleship. Orion merely nods before turning to the door and exiting the room.

Conqueror gives a sigh, her smile not faltering in the slightest. "I apologize for my sister's terseness in all this. She's not used to playing the diplomat." She turns away from Ooyodo, rolling one shoulder. "Rather be part of the mobilization efforts back home, you know?"

    "A leader by example, huh..."

"You got it~" She looks back. "One reason why I'm here to help steer her, you could say...A thankless job, but one I wouldn't trade for the world." Another shrug as she looks to the door and begins to walk out of the room. "Have a pleasant afternoon, 'command cruiser'."

"You as well, Miss Conqueror." The door closes with a soft clack upon the battleship's exit. Ooyodo looks back to the letter, still sealed. "You as well..."

Orion stands by the exit of High Command, head down and arms folded. She avoids looking at anyone in particular, only raising her head upon her sister's approach.

"You could stand to loosen up a little, Orion. They're not our enemies."

"I know that. It's just..." She sighs. "An old habit."

"Hehe, of course it is. We'll have to break you out of those if we're to get more help from anyone, you know?~"

"Tch, you say that as if one can change overnight." She turns away and begins to walk. "If only it were that simple."

Conqueror just smiles and follows after her sister, her eyes keeping their playful glint.

@Observer 39 That's quite the timing on this one here, considering what I'm doing on my own side of the writer's block.

It's no secret that I'm entertaining some Russians and a Brit myself in the next chapter I'm still trying to get out.

@Emerald Acid This idea's been kicking around in my head ever since looking back on Siirakannu's works (specifically his Orion-class BB drawings), and especially so after the Summer 2017 event in KC happened. I had wanted to introduce personified pre-WWII ships in some fashion, and I could tie said event with the Orions due to them being from Britain. I judged the personalities of the two 'veteran Dreadnoughts' based on these pics in particular:

    [+] Spoiler

It also means that Minato will eventually hear of this operation...though I'm not entirely sure when I'll write about it. Got a few other plot points I want to run through first.
Some Russians and a Brit, huh...What could possibly go wrong?

Part Twenty-eight: Friends in Odd Places

The new arrivals acclimate to their new base and its inhabitants over the next few weeks, each in their own ways. Isokaze and Shiranui are the quickest, due to having fellow destroyers to constantly interact with. The capital ship pairs, being the first of their types in the base since Minato's stationing, take a little longer to gain their footing, especially outside of training sessions. Graf is a very personal case for the resident Admiral, being both a foreigner still unused to the landscape and having little to no actual combat experience. Both Hayashimo and Murakumo played large parts in expediting the integration, being the two closest to Minato as secretary ship and combat flagship respectively. The base itself starts to grow as well with resources beginning to come in greater numbers, but the basic shell of a former school is kept intact. Near the end of the month, Yuubari comes back from one of her many stints to High Command with an oddly large shipment...

Upon the call of her arrival back at base, Minato and Hayashimo arrive at the workshop to see Yuubari cracking open a cylindrical container.

"Even more!?! How'd she get so much..." She jolts upward and looks over her shoulder to regard the two who just entered, her eyes sparkling. "Admiral~ Shizuka~ Look at all this!"

The young man raises an eyebrow as he walks forward, looking over the assorted crates and canisters. "When you said large, I wasn't expecting this much...Any indicatiors as to who sent it?"

"A woman calling herself 'Professor' came into High Command a few days ago, asking about you in particular. Told the lady I was stationed with you, which led to a lot of questions..." Her voice trails off for a moment as she tilts her head towards the pile. "And all this."

"'Professor'...A name I haven't heard from in a long time. A friend of mine from another world I traveled to." He stops at a long grey metal container with two large latches on one side. A lone tag adhered to it reads:

    To the Observer,
It has been some time since our last contact with each other. I know you often go out on your own for information and such, but your prolonged and frankly abrupt absence this time was...troubling to explain to others. However, my own travels led me to knowing of your current situation, and such the contents of this package. I'm sure you'll know what to do once you see it for yourself. Oh, and with this and the rest, both our debts are repaid in full, all right?
    Keep up the search,
    Hakase

"Is this another one of her...Hmm." He puts one hand on his chin, tapping his mouth.

Hayashimo tilts her head, a curious look on her face. "Does this woman do this often, Minato?"

"No, hence the surprise. She's mostly selfish and self-centered, driven by her personal missions and pursuit of knowledge. Sharp as a whip and not afraid to speak her mind." He crouches down, popping the latches. They each give with a hiss, as silvery clouds billow out from under the lid.

"It's just like in the sci-fi shows!" The cruiser bounches up and down, her face giddy with excitement. "What's in it, what's in it~"

"Yuubari-san..." The destroyer gives an weary look and sighs.

Minato lifts the lid up, expelling more smoke outward as it swings to the other side on a pair of hinges. As he stands, he peers over the revealed contents, his face changing from curiosity to mild surprise.

Among padding colored the same as the crate lies a young girl, pale of skin and long hair of soft gold bundled into two large tails by small rings, save for a single renegade strand sticking up and out. Two small blue hearts are painted below her closed eyes, with arms slightly spread as if waiting to be embraced. A white sheet with two black lines cover most of her front, with the word "Eldridge" inscribed below a small triangular opening at her small chest. Her sleeves are detached (leaving the shoulders bare), billowing out close to the hands where blue lines of energy have started to form and crawl up. Her stockings are similar, coming up to just above the knees and the same lines forming from the ankles upward slightly. Circular ports are attached to her sleeves and brown shoes, glowing the same color as the lines in a steady rhythm. Tufts of what appear to be fur poof out of the rings binding her hairtails and from out of her shoes, along with bits of metal attached to her forelocks. Arrayed around her are armaments similar to what the destroyers use, albeit with the same circular ports in some spots.

The loose hairstrand twitches a few times, despite no wind. The girl's face scrunches up slightly before her eyes open and turns her head towards Minato. In a quiet voice she utters:

    "Comm...ander?"

Yuubari does a sharp intake of air, putting both hands over her own mouth. Hayashimo looks befuddled, taking a step back from the container. The young man blinks once, then nods slowly.

    "That's right."

She slowly sits up, almost like a doll being pulled by strings. Her salute is a bit more natural, however, and the hairstrand twitches again as she speaks.

"Cannon-class destroyer, Eldridge...has arrived." She drops the salute, then raises her arms towards him along with tilting her head to one side slightly. "Help, Commander...Cold."

Minato looks to Hayashimo, who has returned to a more neutral expression. She merely glances between Eldridge and him, as if expecting something. He moves closer to the young girl, kneeling down with a small smile on his face. "And help I will." He grabs Eldridge just under the arms, stands to lift her out of the crate and then holds her close to his shoulder, one arm sliding down to support her weight and the other on her back. She's about half his height, her twintails as long as she is tall, and is indeed quite cold. "Welcome to your new home, Eldridge."

The girl's arms instinctively wrap around his torso, her face snuggling into said shoulder. "Home...Warm...Like."

Hayashimo's face begins to turn red as she looks away, while Yuubari gives a little squeal as she sways back and forth. "She's so cuuuttteee~ Like those little sister anime characters~ Hehehe."

He tries to set Eldridge down, but she clings more tightly to him. "More like a baby chick..." He pats the young girl's head. "I'm not leaving anytime soon, little one. But I do need to get back to work."

    "...Go with...?"

"I see no trouble with that. Yuubari?"

The cruiser snaps out of her reverie, smacking her cheeks. "Right, right! Sorry, got a bit carried away...I'll get her things situated here now."

    "Good. Haya..."

Hayashimo is already right next to him as he turns, her eyes closed and hands behind her back. "'Let's go', right?" A slight smile comes across her face.

The crossing of worlds continue, this time with Azur Lane, a mobile game making some big waves in Japan as of late. The variety of shipgirls of different nations said game presents along with my want of showing that the Abyss is more of an international threat makes for some fun story potential, since I can have some of them represent the non-IJN fronts that KC doesn't focus on. I plan to only have American ships be from AL for now, but that of course is subject to change.

Here is USS Eldridge, as she appears in AL. Describing her look was quite fun, if a bit tiring...Making sure all the details of one of my favorite girls is properly explained is certainly worth the trouble.
