Re: Tomzai's official military service shenanigans thread

@S.Razelrink Well to be honest the week i have spent there has been more or less awful, i don't like it at all.
However everyone says start is pretty bad and it gets much better after 8th week when you get to specialize in stuff, but well see about that. I really do hope it does.

Re: Tomzai's official military service shenanigans thread

Another week down, it's still pretty awful.

This week we actually got to do stuff with our rifles and got taught how to hold, disassemble, reassemble, clean, maintain and handle a rifle.
We got rest of our equipment, combat vest and stuff, i almost lost my sanity with amount of stuff we need to shove in our tight closets.

What our combat equipment looks like.
    [+] Spoiler

We went to shooting range with equipment shown above + backpack and rifle, needless to say its pretty heavy load. Luckily i didn't need to walk there as i was sent to optician as my eyesight wasn't good enough for shooting at long ranges. I had to walk back along with others and it was pretty tiring.

We also had fitness test to check how good/bad shape we are in, unluckily i managed to get my abs sore somehow so that dragged my score down. However i think it went okay.

I also somehow managed to sleep so that my arm was under my head and i wake up to that, when i woke up i tried to check what is under my head with my right arm and were all confused why it didn't move. Then i checked my arm with my left arm and realized it wasn't there, then i realized it was my arm that was under my head and grabbed it with my another arm, it was all loose and completely numb from shoulder down. It was so weird, numbness wore down in a minute or so. Also even tough this bit doesn't does not concern army in any way i tough't it was dumb enough to be worth telling

    @Tomzai

No worries. It's the army life so I can't imagine you have a lot of free time to do this. Thanks a bunch for posting.

Finland must have good school cafeteria. The school caf here in the states serve a lot of sorry unhealthy crap.

@DoraGrailMon Quality really depends on school(or other facility) and where you go, my hometown has mediocre as best while another town which is smaller has better food, and bigger cities have often the best food. And of course, when you are serving almost thousand hungry conscripts the food is better to be good.

Re: Tomzai's official military service shenanigans thread

    Weeks 3 and 4?

Alright so in these weeks we had introductions to all the stuff we can specialize in including drivers, medics, guerillas, communication and so on.
There was also one for these unmanned recon drones which had separate tests for those who were intrested, there was like 3 persons who raised their hand when asked so out of pity i raised mine too lmao.
When i took those tests i actually got pretty good scores so i got to follow up interviews. That test was pretty easy as it was more or less a shitty reflex game and as i have played games for like 5000 hours, my reflex and eye-hand coordination is pretty much top notch so. Apparently those test are more or less same what jet pilots need to take so i guess i could almost fly one.
So after all that i just may happen to become a drone pilot instead of military cook, who knew.

We also had visiting day where our parents and so on could visit and see what kind of shit we need to go trough, i actually got quite a bunch of pictures of rifles and one-use rocket launchers and other stuff but it's 3am so ill upload those tomorrow.

There was also this dumb happening when i had exemption from heavy physical stuff because i got my leg sore. We had to go to shooting range myself included as that is not too heavy, however no one told me to what wear so i had pretty light minimal clothing on me. It wasn't supposed to take too long but go figure, it just happened to be so that we had 2 ranges with space for 20 person each and there was 47 persons. Guess where i was.
And for some reason it took so dammed long that we had to wait over 2 hours standing still, needless to say it got pretty cold even for me. I had just pants on my legs and temperature was on minus degrees.

Next week we have 2 camps and a march, rip me.

Sorry for late post again anyone who follows this, my motivation haven't really been there and army is so stressful, i even caught cold when i got home.
And yeah, pictures tomorrow if nothing happens.

Re: Tomzai's official military service shenanigans thread

Oh man, this brings back memories. Not from Finland, though. Elsewhere.

For what it's worth, basic training will usually be tougher than specialisation courses, IMO. Unless you go to Officer Cadet School or some similarly elite hellhole. NCO training, your mileage may vary, depending on vocation and country.

In most cases, they (training command, etc.) have a very short window to work with, within which they're expected to drill in all the basic soldiering skills into recruits'/conscripts' heads. Once you get a specific specialisation/vocation (as a private soldier, not in NCO/Officer training as described above), the training window is generally a lot wider and so you can get a lot more free time to play around with.

Also, keep in mind that the training for recruits is meant to more or less kill off your individuality (to an extent) and make you capable of functioning as part of a cog in the mechanism that is the armed forces, so they'll probably be a lot tougher on you in there. Once you're out of that phase, you'll probably get a bit more freedom and independence (insofar as one is capable of being free and independent in the armed forces, that is).

The only advice I can offer for route marches and camps is this:

Route marches - Sing stupid songs, talk to whoever's next to you about the most mundane things possible (assuming you're not marching in single file), just do whatever it takes to keep your mind off the distance and the weight on your back.

Camps - can't say much without knowing the details, but don't think too much about stuff and just do whatever needs to be done. Learning to pitch and strike a tent fast will probably help. Chances are you'll be too tired to care about much else. Guard duty (if it is a thing) sucks, but get it over with and hopefully nothing too bad happens on your watch. Also, helmets have been empirically proven to reduce your IQ by several points when equipped (your INT goes back up once you unequip it).

Finally, don't let the training people (NCOs, Officers, whatever) get to you too much. It's their job, really, to get into your head and mess around in there. Some of them are legit jerks, but others are just doing their jobs, so don't take it too badly. Train, eat, sleep, repeat, and hopefully basic will be over before you know it. Good luck with specialisations, I hope you get something decent. If you're not that high up on the combat fitness scale, you probably won't end up getting packed off to infantry, so you can take comfort in that... I guess. Take care.

@Tomzai Forum rollback quite a while ago. About 5 days worth of posts gone.

Nothing much happening right now, isn't it?
