    Chapter 49: Denied!

Abukuma just flat out got called Kinu. I could feel her animosity shifting slightly away from me due to this ridiculous circumstance. By the time she was past the abyssal ships during her move to get into shooting range, she started replicating the mouth movements that generally boil down to...

    "Close your eyes."

Isuzu followed, not sure if she's accepting our fate or if she's giving Abukuma one last chance to prove that she's on our side. Of course, I didn't take any chances. I kept a hold on both jet and gun triggers just in case this was some dirty trick influenced by Ooyodo's existence.

My response wasn't something she's considering as Abukuma turned around to confront the abyssal admiral. "Hmm? That's wrong! You don't remember me at all! Geeez, y-you'd like burn through all possible choices before you even remember who I am!?"

During this confrontation, some cylinders dropped from the rear end of her rigging and then searing light punctured my eyes. The pain prevented me from even trying to open them! Along with temporary blindness, a painful ringing prevented me from hearing anything. I pulled on the triggers while blind to the results. There might be a chance that Abukuma got hit by my barrage as this wasn't coordinated even at the least. Even when I felt a tackle dragging me against the wind, there was no assurance that the one doing this was an Abyssal or Abukuma.

"Argh! After them! Don't let them get any closer to Tawi-Tawi!"

Those were the words that greeted me when my hearing cleared. The whole blindness thing's taking quite a while, but at the very least I could see the blurred outline of something yellow to my left.

Further right, I could hear Isuzu running her mouth at Abukuma. "Idiot! Don't think you've already regained my trust after this!"

"Fuwaa... Be careful where you're hitting! Ahh! Try to avoid the hair please! It's hard enough carrying the both of you!"

"Well it's going to be even harder since we've got company! Why didn't you wait for Hatsushimoneta to close her eyes in the first place!?"

Wow, she didn't have any reply to that... though I guess I can understand why. Clearing my throat, I tried to negotiate for a temporary truce. "A-ah... If it's okay, can you just push me over towards where we are running? I can jet away until my vision's cleared up."

Isuzu made her frustration blatantly obvious with a sigh, "I don't know what happened between the two of you but can you idiots just cooperate until we've reached somewhere safe!?"

The splashing of water near us and the explosions that followed proved that the abyssals are slowly closing the gap. I had to help Isuzu convince Abukuma or else we'd be toast. "A-abukuma, I'll listen to anything to settle the problem later. Please, just cooperate with me for now!"

Without any verbal reply, I was turned around and given a push forward. If she listened to my request, then this is where we're headed. Discreetly, I whispered to the fairies working my rig. "Fairies! 180 degree rotation, give me a warning sign when we've reached full turn!"

"Idiot! I know I mentioned to work harder but that's overdoing it!"

Regardless of what Isuzu had to say, I turned towards the abyssals. I appreciate Isuzu's concern but I know I'd be fine! So long as I follow what the Admiral taught me, I'd be unstoppable. Starting off with a kick to propel forward, I jet forward at the same time focusing all willpower to take the shape of a bubble. It served as an extension of my senses and the moment the enemy rounds entered its area I've got an idea of the speed, trajectory, and current location of those projectiles. Next thing I know, I was deflecting them with the broad side of my gun mounts. Swatting them away like flies the same way the Admiral did during our duel.

I guess my presence was something our opponents didn't see coming based from the comment I've heard.

"That one doesn't feel like one of that yank's handiwork. Ignore that Isuzu and Yura for now! Focus on that Hatsushimo!"

Commands from the abyssal admiral also copies to our communication channels. I can't tell for sure... No, they surely can hear our communications too. It's practically the same channel if Abukuma's reply was an indicator.

    "Uwaa!? Excuse me!? Yura!?"

"Who else among Nagara's sisters ain't black haired... Natori?"

"Geez! I can't believe this. This is definitely not OK!"

That's got to be some kind of heavy psychological damage. If they're planning on hurting us then I only have one reply.

"I'll protect us! " I declared with total confidence over the communications channel. "There's no room for failure now!"

Matching the intensity of my war cry, our opponent's admiral made his command. "Girls, I leave judgment to your discretion."

Rumbling noises roared over the skies as the same seaplane from earlier passed overhead to tail the retreating Isuzu and Abukuma. I relented from shooting it down to spare the scarce ammunition reserves I have as the two abyssal ships began attacking me relentlessly. Refocusing willpower, I opted for a hardened layer to act as a shielding. It didn't look like how I expected it to be, a flaming aura, but I guess sparkling all over's the best I can get. Style's not important, it's the function!

As the gap closed, I was simultaneously showered with multiple rounds aimed to cover a larger area. They weren't mindless like most of the ones we've fought up till now as that was likely their response to the round deflection. To prevent it, just shoot a number of rounds exceeding the target's number of limbs. Good thing I've opted for the shielding so I could dodge and get protection for whichever went through. Surely, there was one that managed to explode on contact, a delayed one, likely fired after the initial wave.

They weren't changing course as we neared each other, so I braced myself to collide with one of them and hopefully run that one over with the jets. In this case it's the light cruiser as it seems less mobile and would be unable to dodge my attack. To my surprise, the destroyer didn't clear out and actually stuck closer to increase the weight I'd need to push through.

Sounds of metal clashing together began this display of power. I've only got the thrust from the jets to go by so I'd surely lose once the charge runs out. Not only were there two of them, the one that's a taller and more adult-looking abyssal version of a Hatsushimo sports heavier equipment than what I have. The left arm alone had humongous armor, looks like a miniature I-class was bound to it and from that I-class' mouth was two twin-barrel 10cm mounts welded together. But, they didn't even need to wait for the jets to lose charge. Since the abyssal Hatsushimo was keeping me in place, the light cruiser was free to fire and unloaded all guns point blank.

    "Ahh! This doesn't look good."

After the barrage, I was shoved to the side to give way for their pursuit. The strength difference was huge, so I ran after them while weaving side to side. They both look like they're on the heavier side so they're bound to be slower. If I can't overpower, then I'll outmaneuver them!

    Chapter 50: Sending a message

    [Hatsushimoneta]

"Idiot! Just let go and return without me!"

Isuzu trashed around as she tried to weasel away from Abukuma's grip. Getting dragged around probably hurts her pride a lot and she'd rather be torn apart here than bring us with her. In my opinion that's quite amazing, the whole sacrificing one's self to save others... but I won't allow it. No. Not right now.

Abyssal Hatsushimo's surprisingly fast even with her bulkier set of equipment. In a short amount of time since our initial clash, she's caught up to Abukuma and Isuzu. Just like that, she lifts the armored left hand and fired all four gun barrels. My comrades were still unaware of this so I had no choice but to yell out and warn them. "Incoming!"

Just in time, Abukuma turned to raise the shield-like platform she had for landing craft deployment. Those welded together gun mounts were extremely accurate and packed quite the punch. I thought that such firepower would somewhat prove unwieldy but here I was being proven wrong as simultaneous explosions from all four rounds hitting managed to blow the platform out clean from the rigging. Witnessing this aggression, I can't just lounge around and not lay down a surprise of our own. Harnessing the jump jets, I charged forward and used the opportunity to strike from behind.

The slower abyssal light cruiser lagged from the chase. It might've lacked speed but it wasn't lacking in awareness as it had its gun mounts tracking my zig-zagging movement before I charged in. Thanks to that, all the guns were turned to the far right and thus allowing for a small window before they could catch up and aim. In less than a second, I was in range to land a hit, both guns aimed and just about ready to pull the trigger... when a hostile shot invaded my right gun's barrel.

    "Eject!"

Before it could penetrate the mechanism, I had the fairies dislodge that specific barrel. The chance now ruined, I immediately disengaged. Smoothly gliding in reverse, I had the right torpedo launcher lowered and released a single shot. Of course, due to the distance, it was an inefficient attack that was easily dodged. Pulling away, I glimpsed a sharp stare from the abyssal Hatsushimo... her right hand holding one of the pistol-like anti-air secondaries with its barrel still hot with smoke piping out. If she weren't the enemy, I would've been impressed with that feat of marksmanship.

Dismissing my presence, she turns her back and continued to pursue Abukuma and Isuzu. Now that the advantage was foiled, the abyssal light cruiser got her bearing on me and began bombarding relentlessly. Explosions sprayed wide had me dodging and focusing the sparkling shield for extra defense. "A-aah, this makes me want to consider having my guns attached but at the same time hesitant about the idea. That barrel shot might do me in. Kinda makes how Mutsu feels about her turrets clearer."

Sooner or later, the sparkle shield's slow dimming would only mean that my defenses were about to give way. I couldn't help but sigh all over the communications channel. "Aah, it'd be awesome if they'd be taken by surprise again!"

    [2nd Fleet Flagship: Abukuma]

"Idiot! They can tap into our communications! Why did she mention that!?"

Geez... Isuzu's so by the book, does she need to have everything explained ahead of time? And that Hatsushimoneta's been calling the shots ever since she's showed up... annoying. This is a good chance though; I've got to get back somehow anyway after they just blew up my landing craft. Well, I like that she's still working properly instead of just blindly charging... but I've yet to do anything unless they actually took the bait.

I've lowered my stance, took up cruising speed and yelled back through communications. "It's time to act right? That's definitely OK for me!"

Picking up speed, I holstered my gun to free up the hand I'm not using to drag Isuzu over and signaled that I'd like a signal in case our opponents became weary of any surprises from Hatsushimoneta. It didn't take long before I felt Radar's paws touching my nape. "My turn to shine!"

With the left boot rigging in reverse for a hard turn, I flung Isuzu forward. As soon as I've turned around, I had both engines running in reverse at the fastest they can go. Sudden movement on my side alerted abyssal Hatsushimo but I'd wonder if she'd be able to defend against this! Both guns raised and readied, I launched all six torpedoes from both launchers at a 60 degree elevation. The moment they'd gone airborne, abyssal Hatsushimo fired all barrels and the rounds flew straight and pierced through the torpedoes.

    [Hatsushimoneta]

A bunch of explosions and sounds of rapid secondary fire served as the perfect distraction. Without the abyssal Hatsushimo getting in my way, I charged against the waves the moment I'm no longer getting pelted down by gunfire. Getting closer, my target started paddling through the waters with those still human arms. Not the best method for a speed boost, but it lengthened the time before I was comfortable opening fire.

During all of this, I figured the right gun's not in good shape so I stowed it away. The now freed up hand, I used to assist in my aim. My first concern was to take out those stacks of guns before they could reload and retaliate.

"Fairies! Right barrel at 30 degrees elevation." Turning the gun sideways as the fairies complied; I made sure both shells aimed for a few meters on both sides of the target. "Taking the shot! Have a taste of our true power!"

Hearing the sound of gunfire, that abyssal light cruiser just ahead of me swerved to the right. If I hadn't split the barrel's directions and aimed straight ahead she would've dodged. The shot to the right lined up exactly as planned and triggered a chain of explosions. A clean hit! As confirmation, when the tower of smoke thinned down and the flames roared higher, I could clearly see the abyssal light cruiser wading around trying to pry herself off the burning chunks of metal.

"Five shots of oxygen torpedoes! Launching!"

If we let them escape, they might come back later and terrorize other fleets. So I took no chances and emptied out all loaded torpedoes in my launcher.

Leaving a huge fireball in my wake, I rushed towards my allies. Cutting through the waves, I circled around the burning wreckage of my opponent. I stumbled upon Isuzu getting carried away by the currents as she sat down on her damaged rigging. It didn't take her long to notice me too as her voice blared through the comms.

"Idiot! Are you done with the small fry? Help Abukuma and do a pincer attack."

All boilers and turbines running at max capacity, I cruised hurriedly to lend a hand against the abyssal Hatsushimo. While on my way, I thought I might reply to calm Isuzu down and remind her of the current problem. "That was reckless! They can listen in on our communications channel. They might find out that some reinforcements are on the way."

Static filled the channel right after that and the man who greeted us inside the fog stopped his silence, "Hahaha, I guess this other Hatsushimo's been with my girls for quite some time now."

Abukuma's getting her butt kicked from the sheer accuracy of her opponent. Their close proximity to each other might've escalated the problem more. Sweeping in, I pitched in on the shots, now sandwiching our opponent. With this comfortable setup, I can now correct the abyssal admiral's comment about me. "That's right. I've been with them since the Commander arrived at Tawi-Tawi. Also, it's Hatsushimoneta."

"Oh? I'm guessing you didn't come up with that name on your own." Another minute of static followed that amused remark of his before he continued, "If everyone's already dyed in their colors then I guess I won't be doing this like any normal sane person would. Knowing my girls, they should be doing something either crazy or stupid. I'd also like to know the tale as to why you're called Hatsushimoneta, but let's reserve that for another time... we have some meddlers entering the area."

After this declaration through our own communications channel, the Abyssal Hatsushimo bowed down before heading off at full speed towards the foggy islets we just escaped from. On the way there, the abyssal Admiral's voice let one last notice, "Also, Natori. Call those midget subs you've left in ambush earlier after shooting down one of my patrol boats. You're acting like that pretentious little sister of yours... forgot the name."

That's just about everyone and none of the calls hit its mark, I could see the annoyance as she aimed at the sky and emptied out her guns. I thought she was just venting out her frustration but when I looked up to the sky... she was actually taking down the seaplane that led us here. The shot pierced from underneath the cockpit and killed whatever was inside, keeping most of the plane intact as it dived down to the ocean with a splash.

"Geez... I'm definitely OK with taking all of them down! Everyone let's go back to the Anchorage and report this to the Commander!"

I caught up and together we picked Isuzu from the waves tossing her all over the place. On our way out the area after retrieving the seaplane, the meddlers that were mentioned earlier came into view.

@Emerald Acid I beg pardon for copying or adapting some from your style, but hey as I've read somewhere:

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

I wonder if I should rewrite the whole of this in 3rd person perspective, but before that I might release a one shot to see if I've actually improved in that kind of perspective. Hope I get good feedback on it.

@ElleRosewood No need to beg pardon. If it helps makes things clearer and easier, by all means. Not like it's my style specifically anyways.

    Chapter 51: Construction complete

    [Preacher]

Early this morning, I was forced out from bed. It wasn't a gentle awakening at all. Quite frankly, my ears are still ringing from having a radio receiver lovingly shoved up my face. Thought that it'd end there, but time and again these girls prove me wrong.

The harsh sunlight greets my eyes like a sudden visit from the SWAT. No one to blame here, I intentionally kept the windows without curtains so I can peer out anytime even from inside this tiny room beneath the Admiral's office. With my shoulders still quite heavy, I sat up and rested my back on the wall whose paint was already flaking. Sitting beside the bed, the devious imp who brought the radio had her hands outstretched while providing a fresh uniform for me. I don't know how she makes those glasses look opaque, but that coupled with her signature impish smile could only spell trouble... And as she wouldn't budge, I uttered my grievances.

"I can tell that you're upset about something but kindly get out the room or stand behind this wall of file cabinets I've specifically placed beside this bed as a vain attempt to gain privacy?" As I said that, I made sure I've pointed to my right. "No matter what anyone tells you, I dislike getting naked in front of women who aren't my wife."

Aggression was blatantly obvious in her tone as she replied after quite a long pause. "Commander, whatever do you mean? I am absolutely, definitely, without a shadow of a doubt not upset at all about your spending on Akashi's projects."

A short pause after she emphasized on that last part, she leans in forward like a mobster shaking a random schmuck down. "You see, the more you fund her, the better she can perform Choukai's requests..."

The moment I've heard that it was about her arms race against Akashi for Choukai's approval, I had to interject. "I believe Hana left the framework before my mother took her to a safe place?"

Of course, this solved the problem right then and there. Springing back up like a puppy's tail from delight she stopped with the threatening demeanor but still retained some bits of ridicule. "Commander, the plans are amazing! They definitely have that air of competency in them!"

"Yeah, right. She knows that I'm familiar with planes so I've got that going for me. Now excuse me since you don't seem like you're looking away anytime soon."

I rolled back onto the bed and kicked the blanket all over me. Underneath the cover I've began to change my outfit while Ooyodo continued yapping.

"Right. I have to question the amount of resources spent on the project. Any competent commanding officer should be well aware that due to the signing of the Autonomous Naval District Protocol of Yokosuka, we no longer receive supplies from any form of fleet command. As I can remember the anchorage should not have any spares unless the Commander has secrets he doesn't impart with me."

I've only finished putting on my lower clothing when she sprung that topic. I was not informed about any kind of exorbitant expenditure. Without even sparing a thought on finishing getting dressed I kicked the blanket away and sat up. "What!?"

"Commander, I'm sure you know what this means if you are surprised yourself."

I swiped that clipboard from her hand and shoved my face up on the numbers. Of course, it was a blur so I reached for the side table and wore my glasses. The clarity soon brought up quite a ridiculous price tag. "What in tarnation!? Explain how..."

As I turned to her, that wide grin on her face gave the situation away. Like she's already achieved victory or something, she replied in a sultry voice. "Choukai should be here any moment."

Now I better be clear with her before this inevitably ends into another shit fest. "You do know that Akashi could easily track that you snitched this up to me right?"

"Commander, I was not informed that I am the only one in this Anchorage who is not allowed to keep secrets."

In my mind, I wanted to remind her that it was part of her punishment for her involvement in that incident with the previous commanding officer... but I decided to relent as there was a more pressing matter.

A multitude of the newly painted larger planes were lined up on the miniature airbase for drying. A bunch of the fairies were wandering around all dressed up in aviator gear as if they were shopping. Some of those who had apparently found their assigned aircraft began work on applying their personal touches.

It was a refreshing sight that I couldn't help but comment, "First day of work huh."

"Commander, are you reminiscing fond memories of your first day of work too?"

I glanced at Ooyodo grinning at me as we walked down the path alongside Choukai, "The two of you would be in much more dire straits if I was blown out of the sky that day."

With a calm reply, Choukai pointed out how improbably that situation was. "The probability of that happening should be well below 0.00001%"

"You've got a lot of confidence in Maya. I'll ask Yuubari for some service records so we can set a standard for Teruzuki once she's done listening to 10,000 hours of gunfire."

Perfect timing, we stumbled upon Yuubari about to finish painting the flight squadron colors. She stood up from a squatting position, stretched her limbs as she saw our arrival, and then greeted us eagerly. "Alrighty, today is an important day for us. Tell us your thoughts after this, Commander!"

I raised my hand for a wave to acknowledge her excitement, "That reminds me, we're assembling the main fleet today right?"

"Yes, a newly established fleet's on the way here as we speak." she replied as she unzipped that orange mechanic suit she wore down to the middle and tied the sleeves around her waist, "We've sent Isuzu and Abukuma to escort them here."

I know that the climate around here's pretty hot but I find it strange that she's stripping down to a baggy shirt in front of me. Not wanting to look like a lech, I rolled my eyes over to the side to inspect the planes I've ordered while conversing. Normally, I wouldn't be over analyzing this if not for Ooyodo mentioning something shady happening around the arsenal. "If we're on friendly terms then that could only refer to this country's newly constructed base..."

Now, the way she mentioned it after I brought up the topic of the main fleet's assembly was kind of indicative that they plan to incite me to ask for an exercise. That's a horrible idea! I've heard from the telly news being aired is that this country's fleet, being newly established and wholly under experienced, was also terribly lacking in armaments. Even the meager ones they have are also horribly outdated. "Hey now! That's not a good thing, we'd look like bullies!"

"Not true! The data we can gather could also be used to help them improve and..." Yuubari gestured for me to face Choukai, she had her head bowed down for some reason. "Our flagship kinda has a favor to settle with that fleet's flagship. So Ho~wzit?"

"Commander, I would like to ask that you consider this. Apologies as well for not mentioning beforehand, but I would like to give a token of appreciation for her help regarding Kure's Nagato."

Sigh. I guess there's no changing this part about them, might as well just roll with it. However, before agreeing to their combined request and weighing the pros and cons I slowly turned to Ooyodo who had been smiling widely all this time. "I hope the live ammunition's already labeled as such?"

"Commander, that is quite rude of you! We are not actively trying to kill them unlike last time."

    Chapter 52: Test Run

    [Hatsushimoneta]

We've got those towering palm trees calmly waving to the breeze on our sights now. Mellow waves of the anchorage's seafront tossed the ever noisy alarm line of buoys that immediately went silent as we neared them. The ringing now gone, the gentle crashing of waves served as a welcoming assurance... we've finally reached Tawi-tawi.

Isuzu sat atop a stripe patterned lifesaver while Abukuma kicked it forward every now and then. Her rigging, already detached and currently being dragged by chain, gets tossed upward every now and then, revealing a mass of writhing black tentacles burrowing deep from underneath. The observation seaplane we recovered from the earlier run-in with the abyssals serving as the source.

See, after the recovery, Abukuma asked for Isuzu to hold the plane as we traveled back. Somewhere along the way, these tentacles burst out from inside the plane and tried to burrow through Isuzu. Since Isuzu's still with us right now, she managed to not get caught but it latched on to her rigging. There was no hesitation in her mind when she rapidly dislodged everything. She would've swam back to the nearest shore if she could. Now, I would've offered to carry her along if someone wasn't clinging to me like a mass of tentacles.

    "Aa-ah, what are you doing?"

No matter how soft... these pair of hands squeezing my cheeks surely wasn't something I'd appreciate. I'm thankful though that I wouldn't have to take a lonely trip across the vast featureless oceans, since Abukuma's returned to giving me the cold shoulder. Apparently, since there's no longer any urgent need to cooperate she went right back to ignoring me. Isuzu, on the other hand, is too horrified to even respond properly after the deal with the recon plane.

In general, I'm not opposed to this display of affection... but the military camouflage-wearing, bob cut-haired, landing craft-carrying fleetgirl with a baffling amount of optimism and pride takes it one too many levels than normal. My cheeks are already sore from the pinches as she squealed, tossed and turned in glee like an aunt who dotes too much on a niece or nephew. Her offering of a bag of dried fruits as we cruised also doesn't help. "Just a few more squeezes! Here I'll give you some dried mangoes in exchange for a few more minutes!"

"A-ah... we shouldn't be snacking out in the open sea."

Another pinch on the cheek then she shoved the sweets closer. "No, no. That's just you being shy. You know, refusing food in this country's considered rude. You don't want to be a bad girl now don't you?"

"A-ah... then I'll have one." There doesn't seem to be a way out of it. I hung up my gun mounts by the rigging's side and grabbed one of the treats. "Thank you."

I bit into the dried fruit and she swoons while watching. "Aaw! I wanna take you back home! But I guess I can't do that so I'll have to settle pulling you into our team for today's exercise!"

Judging by the three other fleetgirls with her, I wonder if she believes that's enough to challenge Choukai. I continued chewing and made sure I'm done before giving my thoughts on the matter. "You sound like you've been waiting for this for quite some time now."

"You bet'cha! I've finally got my own comrades so it's time to wipe the floor with Choukai. In fact, we're all carrying practice equipment right now!"

That's awesome in a way! We stumbled upon reinforcements carrying practice equipment and still managed to have the abyssals retreat. Abukuma herself was extremely happy at the turn of events that she yelled out towards the direction we came from.

"That's gotta be it! That's what you get for forgetting about me! Admiral, you idiot!"

"Esteemed guests. We extend our deepest gratitude for your visit to our humble naval base. However, our Commander wishes to remind you that you'd require proper authentication from him the next time you would visit... No matter your acquaintance to our highly capable Flagship. As pre-arranged, please follow the instructions of your escorts."

That was Ooyodo just now on public broadcast. From how she stressed on the word "escorts", Abukuma and Isuzu's already been caught sneaking. Isuzu's still fuzzed out, but Abukuma continued playing along with the setup and led us over to the Arsenal's test port. It was a short detour to the southeast instead of the normal port near the southwest side of the island.

A small, but thick, steel ramp was laid out over a natural decline towards the water. Akashi was waiting there with a bunch of equipment lined out. She had her cheeks puffed up, furious at Abukuma and Isuzu. However, she quickly watered down when she noticed that Isuzu wasn't feeling peachy. Running down the ramp, she extends her hand out to Isuzu. "Eh!? What happened?"

    "Uuuu... We found Isuzu-nee's seaplane"

    "Where is it?"

Abukuma tugged on the chain towards Isuzu's wrecked rigging and made it obvious that something wasn't right. "It's hideous though."

"Right... don't worry!" With half a smile, Akashi took the chain and pegged it on the ground beyond the steel ramp. "I'll have Hiyou-san and the others have a look at it."

Abukuma went on her way, assisting Isuzu toward's the infirmary. I opted to follow, but Akashi called me over as I got up on the ramp. "It's about time we replace that rigging. Right? Choukai does have you listed down for the main fleet so we'd like you to try out your new set of equipment."

77 objects, raising her hand to catch Akashi's attention. "Ahhhh! I've got my hand on her first and she already agreed to be on our team for today's exercise!"

I took a bow to apologize. "Sorry, I have to keep my word."

"I'm sure that Choukai would understand. Don't worry about it. Let's have you readied for the exercise before it gets dark."

Decked out in my new gear, I circled around 77 as she began to relay orders. Brimming with confidence, she starts counting starting with herself. "Let's see... one... Hatsushimoneta, two. Lucy, three. Kyuby, four. We've got four out of five shawties. It'd be perfect when we last till night. As long as it's still lit, we'd just wander around and try to evade as possible!"

The tallest of the group called for 77's attention. "El presidente, por favor."

    "What is it Rei-rei?"

"What would be your orders for me?"

77 seemed like she was pondering. Among the five of us, she had the bulkiest rigging. Several heavy guns lined the length of her rigging but from the material, it was fair to say that she would've been the softest one against attacks. "Ah! I've got it. Hop over from island to island and keep hidden. Raise your canvas right now and let's have Lucy and Kyuby camouflage it with the foliage."

The milder one with long brown hair nodded in agreement while the one with neck length wavy hair jumps up from excitement. "Leave it to the two of us! We'll definitely make sure that Reina's canvas would be the pretiest cover they'd ever see!"

77 reacted favorably to that enthusiasm and revs up her engines. "Alright! Kyuby, that's the spirit! Make sure that Rei-rei's well hidden! And Rei-rei, take the shot when you got them lined up nicely!"

Rei-rei as 77 calls her, gently bows down to comply. "Gracias. May we have fair skies until the night."

Hyped up for combat, 77 charged ahead; the sound of gunfire from the other end of the naval base being the signal to start the exercise. "Let's go! go! go! Hatsushimoneta, follow me!"

"They should've detected us by now! Be careful!"

I rushed ahead of 77 at the moment I spotted a recon seaplane overflowing to the brim with radar equipment and a dish atop it. 77 tried to overtake, but I made sure to cut her off and repeat my warning. "This looks reckless; Choukai's guns should have longer range than what we have..."

"Eh, we're so far away. They'd need to have the really heavy battleships if they wanted to hit us at this range!" she simply laughed at the idea.

My ears caught some extremely loud booming sound and instinctively crossed both my gun mounts in front of me. I would've jumped away using the jets but 77 was directly behind me so I focused all energy to defend. A stream of light flashed towards us and a vague dolphin-like projectile went splat on impact with the sparkle shield. It exploded into dozens of cotton fillings and scraps of blue and white cloth. That might not been lethal, but if I were to guess... getting hit could knock you out cold.

77 stumbled back and landed on her butt. "A-ah... after I've just mentioned it!"

Extending a hand to help her get back up, I hoped this got the point across. "Things are a lot different down here."

    Chapter 53: Imprint

    [Remodeled Heavy Cruiser Choukai]

Status report, fairies aboard my observation seaplane echoed back a direct hit on our target... as expected. Such an opportunity to take Hatsushimoneta down a notch was something we can't let pass. Even the commander agrees that one way to have her cooperate better was to prove that we are at least on par to Kure's fleet.

"Akagi-san, Kumano, Teruzuki. We might end up being unable to exert the new rigging to their full potential."

I gave pause and everyone else followed. The waves gently bobbing us around, we first waited out Akagi's reply. Bending her newly acquired Akashi customized great bow in half, a fold-able one, Akagi took hold of a heavy anchor chained to a new belt-like rigging and started spinning it around.

"Oyamatsumi-sama had advised me to lessen my activities. Worry not, Takao's little sister."

"I am glad to hear that." I nodded, acknowledging her reply before I turned to Kumano and Teruzuki. "Kumano can still potentially practice protecting Yuubari from Sangley point's fleetgirls. For Teruzuki... it should be good practice trying to shoot down incoming shells instead of planes."

"Oh my, isn't this quite a disappointment?" Elegantly, she flicks the rapier to the side and stowed it hanging by the rigging belt. Hanging by a strap across her shoulders was a flight deck converted to a shield. "Let them come if they intend to pose a challenge."

"Teruzuki, about your..." Nothing but embarrassment filled my self when I saw her wearing ear muffs. "I am sorry! I forgot!"

Taking them off, I repeated my command. "Teruzuki, we might not get a use for the anti-air equipment. Please try to shoot down their projectiles if you can."

Receiving her eager nod as a reply, I handed back the ear muffs and turned to Yuubari. It was nice of her to explain the situation while she worked on fixing the currently smoke churning experimental railgun. "The data was right on the mark! The rails get shot up after a number of uses so I'd like it if we'll assign someone to look after me while I'm tinkering. Of course, it's not just a single shot, the number's only low since we're shooting stuffed toys right now."

"Kumano should be more than capable of keeping you safe during repairs." I offered, as Kumano comes skating around gracefully on the surface of the water.

"Worry not, I shall treat you the same way a noble lady treats her most prized articles of clothing."

"Thanks." Yuubari then jams a new pair of rails into the hulking contraption and the whirring of electricity returned. It got stronger as more of the indicator lights brightened up on the panel near the weapon's trigger. "Alrighty, let's get those coordinates! The M.E.L.O.N. Launcher's up and running again."

    [Hatsushimoneta]

"Waaah! We'd be sitting ducks out here!" 77 latched onto the back rigging while trying to fit her whole body behind my frame. "Let's hide! Towards the islands! Go! Go! Go!"

Instead of following the order, I charged onward at full speed. If I could avoid Choukai's tricks then I could simply zip around and whittle down everyone else slowly. That was, until I've noticed 77 trying to influence my cruising directly. Overloaded turbines roared as I decelerated to a crawl.

"Oh no you don't!" She raised her voice as she rapidly kicked against the water to further put a brake on my plans. "Over my dead body!"

The smoke stacks on her rig churned out fluffy chunks of smog. They won't miss that pillar of smoke so the surprise is ruined. "A-ah! Stop! You'll burn your turbines out! I'm going already so please stop!"

Focus returned up ahead, I went on the lookout for that shiny bright light. Yes! The light's starting to build up just ahead... I meant no! They're about to shoot again! I just hope it won't be too late! "Fairies! On full reverse!"

I forgot that 77's still trying to pull me back and the doubled acceleration had us topple over. Before hitting the water's surface, another dolphin shaped projectile screeched across the skies towards us. My bum was raised up into air. If that gets hit, I won't be able to sit or lie down for days! I mashed all the newly added triggers on the improved jump jets. Without delay, all of them shot out a quick burst that pushed us down. My legs were still in the path so I just closed my eyes and spread them out.

A muffled explosion followed by the sensation of the wind breaking against my face had me snap my eyes open. Ah... my skirt's torn off. It looks like a shark chomped on it. Clenching my right fist to pull on the right side triggers, I flipped around while falling and saw 77 bouncing back up to the water's surface.

Fairies aboard her rigging emerged from their posts and lounged out in the open as 77 coughed again and again. Eyes teary and red, I think she wasn't prepared for a plunge and managed to drink a few saltwater.

"Ah! Langya..." She sneezed out and her nose started running. "What's this?"

I moved closer and took a bow to apologize. "A-ah... sorry, I didn't mean to."

One of her fairies waved into the air so she picked it up and placed it near her ears. I peered in on what's happening and saw it whispering. Even from outside, I could tell that the rigging's practically dead. Must've been that muffled explosion as we bounced back after the jump jet's downward push. 77 lowered the fairy down and sighed, looking downcast. "And I've been looking forward to take Choukai down by myself..."

That felt bad... I went down on all fours and begged forgiveness immediately. "I'm really sorry!"

    "You should take responsibility now!"

Her reply sounded cheerful. That was worrying, so I decided to glimpse if she was faking it. Unbelievable! She's still smiling. I was really sure she'd scold me hard because of what happened. In my confused daze, she slowly paddled herself towards me and placed her hands over my shoulders. "Snap out of it and let's start hiding on the islands till night time. I mean, I can't exactly make out the details but that fleetgirl in red and white, twirling a chained anchor above her head like a cowboy rushing towards us could really, really be trouble."

77 turned me around for a look. Ah! It's a relief that eyes don't pop out of their sockets and the sun's still shining even though it's starting to get dim! Since that over there is something I wouldn't want chasing me up into the night! "A-akagi-san!?"

Star struck, 77 clapped her hands and went giggling like a fangirl. "Akagi, you meant the carrier Akagi?"

I shot up to stand as fast as I could possibly have. The carriers possess more power output than a destroyer, but during that night before... she wasn't even on her rig and her strength and speed was comparable to an actual oni! "W-w-we should take her out... quick!"

"What are you saying? Wouldn't we be at an advantage at closer range since she won't have time to launch her planes? He-hey! Wha-what do you think you're doing!? A-ah! That rigging is expensive!"

Stowing away both guns, I focused the sparkles and they gathered around my hands as a sharp blade? for what purpose? Of course, to sever 77's back rigging and lower her weight for an escape as I would not want to risk having Akagi reach us! No. Not until we're with the others and she's under a full barrage.

"Fairies, stay put! The rig should float atop the water and we'll be sure to collect everyone!"

We turned towards the island opposite the anchorage, pushing on full speed, barely past the red on the speed gauge; we should start gaining distance but then I felt something wrapping around my waist and abruptly putting a stop to our escape. Unintentionally, I ended up pushing 77 away as I clutched my stomach in pain and threw up a bit.

"It seems like I've finally caught you!"

I stuck out my hand towards the island up ahead. 77 quickly drifting further away as I am slowly yanked closer and closer to a crazed Akagi.

    She gonna get ate.

Although I think I might have gotten lost at some point. If yu wouldn't mind refreshing me a bit, how did we end up with Hatsushimoneta fighting against the base that her commander is currently working with?

I always pull my weight. I just happen to be made of helium.
