Considering that putting up any ruling entity without prior institution or history will screw up the region (see: Libya and Iraq right now), maybe a victory for the Assad-led forces would be better for Syria in the long-term. That being said his victory would probably go against the wishes of a few countries who don't wish for him to be in power due to his allegiances. Feel for the people who haven't evacuated and but at the same time kinda miffed that they didn't evacuate during the past 20 dozen ceasefires.

@Soryuu I'm still utterly confused why the US is selling weapons to these "moderate headchoppers rebels" who I can only assume to be what we used to call "ISIS" before reasons. Well, confusion isn't really the right word. From a FP point of view, it's so much easier to apply pressure to the Assad regime than to deal with the shifting mire of jihadi groups with fairly unpredictable (and undesirable) political and religious views. The West is just crying its crocodile tears that Russia chose to intervene on behalf of Syria while trying to drag out the proxy war.

@Jifaru Yeah precisely this regarding those rebels. That's why previously established institutions and connections are important and all for a more stable nation. Practically speaking an Assad regime is better than the awful situation that it is right now. Well the US is still bothering to sell weapons to the Peshmerga as well, who are just as mired and unpredictable as the moderate headchopping rebels but for some reason everyone's cheering for them. I guess everyone likes the underdog. I'm guessing a lot of the US policy comes from considering their own image they project to the world (anti-Russia, trying to protect Israel), not practicality.

All the high officials in the US foreign policy establishment are in the pay of Saudis and Qataris, so the foreign policy you see enacted is that of the latter and has nothing to do with Americans or US interests other than that it's our government which has been effectively overthrown by these foreign powers.

@Kalinsre I'm feeling a certain star symbol could be blamed.
