    Forum Bot Swarm Countermeasure

Seeing as how the site is being swarmed with bots recently, perhaps it's time to take some countermeasures?

ULMF, a distant cousin of himeuta, had the same issue I think. They fixed it by muting all new registrations and personally activating them upon receiving a PM verifying that the user is a human.

Thanks for the suggestion. We will definitely look into measures to stop the bots. In the meanwhile we appreciate your patience with us dealing with the bots as there could be temporary delays in the bot removal.

@boukyaku It seems I'm not the only person seeing that.

As Himeuta gets noticed, so are the spam "account bots". At least this are not "in that level" yet.

Best to purge before things go a little off.

I think these boots are easy confirm:

    1. They not used correct names just random characters.
    2. Don't post real thing, just place urls with minimal text, with multiply post in a single time
    3. Maybe don't post at all (sleepers?).
    4. I don't sure, but their account might incomplete is some aspect.

Solution: delete or suspend boots account (maybe delete is too harsh). Can we implement some capcha like features: when the new topic is created?

I think it's better to just prevent them to create bot accounts and delete already existing one. Right now they spamming by creating new threads, it's gonna escalate. Even if you capcha new topics, it doesn't rule out the possibility they can spam on already existing threads. Then you have to capcha every posts, which will be annoying for the regular users.

If you find a virus or malwares in your PC, kill them! Don't keep it around. :(

@hidahos well the harsh option is the best option. Besides they're spam adbots, it is basically dealing Chaos scum that keeps popping from the warp

I did read a post by one of the mods at ULMF stating the situation when that forum was overrun by adbots. It started small and simply escalated as time went on. They decided to just disable posting from new registrations as the mods were tired of manually deleting the topics.

    Code:
    SELECT ipaddress
    FROM user
    WHERE usertitle = 'Banned'
    GROUP BY ipaddress
    HAVING sum(posts) < 2
Should keep active users out of the ban list but the spambots in. We'll see how much that cuts down and see if we still need to pursue other options.

Temporary system in place. New user's posts will be placed into moderation queue. If they arent spam links someone will need to approve them to be moved out of moderation. It may take an hour but they will also be moved out of automatic moderation. Apparently, vbulletin thinks moderated post still count as posts so manual movement is needed.

Still working on a more automated process but things are complicated.
